Sunset, Dog, Human

I was watching the sunset on a small hill when I felt something moved near me; there was a dog, it was taking a walk. It looked around, walked a couple of steps, sniffed a few spots, strolled passed me before settling to take the front row seat, facing the same direction as I was.

For a while, we just watched the sunset together; how the colours in the sky changed, how the rays shone through the blanket of cloud, how the golden lining highlighted the underside of the ever changing texture of smaller clouds. Birds flew overhead and we were both momentarily distracted at the same time.

In that moment, I realised I felt more connected to the dog than anyone and anything else in this world. I thought to myself, we ain’t that different, dog and human!

The sun set and it got dark. Just as I was about to leave, the dog stood up. But just as the dog stood up, I saw another human about to leave. That human stood up and walked a few steps to reveal 2 plastic bowls on the hill.

In that moment, I realised, I realised why the dog watched the sunset. Oh, how human indeed!
